Bitcoin access is banned in Bangladesh
Buying bitcoin in Bangladesh is effectively prohibited, and this page will not pretend otherwise. Bangladesh Bank treats cryptocurrency trading as a violation of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947 and anti-money-laundering law, has warned against it repeatedly since 2014, and reinforced the ban with a fresh notice in September 2025 threatening license revocation and prosecution for anyone facilitating crypto transactions. No regulated exchange offers taka deposits, and none of the platforms we review can be recommended here. Despite this, peer-to-peer activity is widespread: Chainalysis ranked Bangladesh among the world's top adopters in its 2025 index. This page explains the legal position and the risks rather than offering a buying route that does not lawfully exist.

Watch: bitcoin in Bangladesh
A video overview of bitcoin in Bangladesh. Read the legal status section first: the rules here are restrictive and the video does not change them.
The legal status above still applies. The video is informational and may predate current rules. From our YouTube channel @dontgetrekt, uploaded 2023-02-13.
Do you need a VPN?
A VPN does not change the legal position set out above: the law applies to you regardless of where your connection appears to come from, and exchanges verify identity on every network. We review VPNs as privacy tools that keep your browsing away from your network operator and internet provider, not as a way around any restriction.
If you run one for privacy, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).
What the law says
Cryptocurrency trading is banned in practice in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Bank applies the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947 and the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012 to prohibit buying, selling, and transacting in crypto, with public warnings dating back to 2014 and the most recent reinforcement issued in September 2025. No law explicitly criminalizes simply owning bitcoin, but there is no lawful way to buy it with taka through the banking system, and facilitators face prosecution.

Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal in Bangladesh?
No, not in any practical sense. Bangladesh Bank prohibits crypto transactions under foreign exchange and anti-money-laundering law, and has said it is not considering legalization. Simply possessing bitcoin is not explicitly criminalized, but buying and trading it are treated as unlawful.
What laws are used against crypto trading in Bangladesh?
Authorities rely mainly on Section 33 of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947 and the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012. The September 2025 central bank notice warned that entities facilitating crypto transactions face license revocation and criminal cases.
Do people in Bangladesh still use bitcoin?
Yes, mainly through informal peer-to-peer channels, and adoption rankings place Bangladesh surprisingly high. That activity carries legal risk on top of the usual scam and counterparty risk, since there is no lawful dispute path if a trade goes wrong.
Could the ban in Bangladesh change?
There is periodic public discussion about regulating digital assets, but Bangladesh Bank has said it remains opposed, and the September 2025 notice moved in the opposite direction. Until the law changes, assume any crypto purchase in Bangladesh is prohibited.
