You can buy bitcoin legally in Hungary, though the market is still recovering from a turbulent stretch: Bitvavo is the cheapest of the platforms serving Hungarians and leads our ranking, with Bitpanda and Kraken next, and Relai, Coinbase, Bitstamp, and Binance also available under the EU's MiCA framework. In July 2025 Hungary criminalized trading on unlicensed platforms, prompting Revolut, Bitstamp, and others to suspend services; the government elected in 2026 moved to scrap those criminal penalties and align fully with MiCA, and the National Bank of Hungary issued the country's first MiCA license, to local firm CoinCash, in July 2026. Forint or euro bank transfers are the usual funding rails, and gains are taxed at Hungary's flat 15 percent rate.

Do you need a VPN?

A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.

If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Legal status and regulation in Hungary

Bitcoin is legal in Hungary and the sector falls under the EU's MiCA regulation, supervised by the National Bank of Hungary (MNB). A criminal code amendment effective July 1, 2025 made trading on unauthorized platforms punishable by prison, driving Revolut, Bitstamp, and other providers to suspend Hungarian crypto services; the government that took office in 2026 announced the repeal of those penalties to realign fully with MiCA. The MNB granted Hungary's first MiCA license, to local firm CoinCash, in July 2026.
