Buying bitcoin in Spain is legal and easy, and Bitvavo leads our ranking on the fee criterion, ahead of Relai, a bitcoin-only app with self-custody by default and a MiCA licence covering the EEA, and Kraken, whose long security record suits regular buyers; Bitpanda, Coinbase, Bitstamp, and Binance also serve Spain under the EU framework. SEPA transfer from any Spanish bank account is the standard funding route and usually free. The regulatory handover is complete: since Spain's MiCA transition closed on 30 June 2026, the CNMV authorises and supervises every crypto platform operating in the country. One Spanish particular to remember: holdings on foreign platforms above the reporting threshold must be declared to Hacienda on form 721.

Watch: how to choose an exchange

This is our general video rather than a walkthrough for Spain. It shows the method in two steps: first the country you are buying in, then the exchange. You have done step one by being here, so start from the exchanges ranked above.

Do you need a VPN?

A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.

If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Buying bitcoin in Spain, start to finish

  1. Pick a platform and verify your identity

Choose from the table above and complete KYC verification with a photo ID. Regulated platforms in Spain require this before you can deposit.

  2. Fund your account with SEPA transfer

Place your order, and for anything more than pocket money consider moving it to a hardware wallet you control. Our security guide covers the habits that keep coins safe.

Legal status and regulation in Spain

Bitcoin is fully legal in Spain and now regulated under the EU's MiCA framework. The CNMV took over authorisation and supervision of crypto-asset service providers from the Banco de Espana registry at the end of 2024, and Spain's transition period for firms operating under the old national registration closed on 30 June 2026, so only MiCA-authorised providers may serve Spanish customers. Spanish residents must also declare significant crypto holdings on foreign platforms to the tax agency.

Frequently asked questions

Is bitcoin legal in Spain?

Yes, fully. Spain applies the EU's MiCA regulation, with the CNMV authorising and supervising crypto-asset service providers since the national transition ended on 30 June 2026. Buying, holding, and selling bitcoin is legal for individuals.

Do I have to declare bitcoin to the Spanish tax agency?

Gains from selling crypto are taxed as savings income and must go on your annual return. Separately, holdings kept on foreign platforms above the legal threshold must be reported on informational form 721. Penalties for skipping the declaration can be significant, so check the Agencia Tributaria's current guidance.

What is the cheapest way to buy bitcoin in Spain?

Send euros by SEPA transfer, which most platforms accept free of charge, and place orders on the exchange's trading interface instead of the instant-buy screen. Cards and wallets like Apple Pay are faster but carry a convenience markup.

How do I verify a platform is authorised for Spain?

Check the CNMV's public register of authorised crypto-asset service providers, or the ESMA register covering the whole EU. A platform absent from both should not be trusted with your money.
